After a promising Friday, the Lotus team experienced a tough Race 1 in the Formula V8 3.5 round at Red Bull Ring in Spielberg. Local hero René Binder was forced to retire due to contact with another driver while he was fighting for P4. Roy Nissany had to use all his strenght to end in P6, managing strong vibrations in the car right from the beginning.

Rene Binder (#3) – Q1 P9 1:16.442 – Race 1 DNF

“I had a really good start and I gained two positions. Then I was always behind Celis, I tried to overtake him several times but it was very difficult. When he made a mistake in turn 2 we went side by side, but he pushed me off the track and I collected a lot of grass into the sidepods. My engine started overheating and I had to retire. He was later penalized with two positions on the grid for tomorrow, but this does not help me anyway”.

Roy Nissany (#4) – Q1 P7 1:16.360 – Race 1 P6 +10.504

“The start was very good but I’ve been blocked by another car at the first corner, so I lost two positions. Then on turn 2 I had big lock-up in braking, and from that point on I had huge vibrations. The car became almost undriveable, it was just about surviving to the end of the race. I was even seeing double and so I had some medical issues after the race. After the chequered flag I had a long phisioterapy session and I will try to have a good rest for Sunday. Looking at the positive sides, I could finish the race and get some points, but we need to check the car because the vibration felt too strong to be caused only by a lock up. Unfortunately I lost one place in the championship but it’s not a big deal. We’ll try to have a better day tomorrow”.
