Fittipaldi hands Lotus race 2 win in Jerez
Pietro Fittipaldi posted his third win of the season today at Jerez de la Frontera in Race 2 of the World Series Formula V8 3.5 weekend at the Spanish venue. The Brazilian racer started off with a sensational pole this morning before cruising to victory in an hat-trick which also featured the fastest lap of the race. After being passed by Egor Orudzhev at the start, Fittipaldi fought back in turn 3 and never looked back crossing the line ahead of the pack.
Rene Binder put together a solid weekend in Andalusia. Despite not being able to celebrate on the podium, the Austrian made the most out of the situation with a fifth place which enabled him to maintain his championship lead although it is now down to just 1 point over his team-mate. Lotus remains comfortably at the top of the team championship as the series heads to the next round set for June 24th and 25th at Motorland Aragón.
“We knew we needed a good start and we had a decent one but Egor started even better. Knowing that is really hard to overtake during the race and that there was some dirt in turn 2, I cut underneath him. We got really close and it was good from him to give me room, I kept it flat and got ahead. After that it was just about having a good pace and controlling the race which we did. I want to thank the team, my sponsors and Jaime Alguersuari for this great championship.”
“The qualifying was not so good today as I struggled a bit with the track conditions and in the end finishing P5 in race 2 was really the maximum I could get. I also suffered a little bit here last year so I think we will get better again and we are still P1 in the championship.”
